The Working With Rescue Dogs Certificate

Every year, tens of thousands of dogs pass through the UK rescue system carrying histories that shape their behaviour, health, and emotional wellbeing in profound ways. Working effectively with these dogs — whether as a volunteer, staff member, foster carer, adopter, or professional — requires far more than a general love of dogs. It requires an understanding of where they’ve come from, what they’re carrying with them, and how to support them through recovery and into stable, lasting homes. This course gives you the practical, evidence-based knowledge to do exactly that. Covering everything from decompression and behavioural assessment through to fear, aggression, training, nutrition, and successful rehoming, the Working With Rescue Dogs Certificate equips you with the skills to genuinely change outcomes for dogs whose lives depend on the humans around them getting it right.

Who Is This Course For?

Rescue centre staff and volunteers looking to deepen their professional knowledge and improve outcomes for the dogs in their care.

Foster carers who want to understand and support the dogs staying in their homes more effectively.

Adopters (and prospective adopters) preparing to welcome a rescue dog into their family.

Dog professionals (trainers, walkers, groomers, vet nurses) whose work regularly brings them into contact with rescue dogs and their owners.

Anyone considering a career in canine rescue, welfare, or behaviour who wants a solid foundation to build on.

What the Learner Will Gain:

Understanding of the rescue dog: The varied backgrounds dogs arrive from, why history matters, and how to receive a new arrival safely and humanely.

Health and welfare knowledge: How to assess physical condition, recognise common medical issues in rescue populations, safely re-feed malnourished dogs, and make sensible dietary choices.

Behavioural expertise: Evidence-based approaches to fear, anxiety, phobia, separation problems, aggression, and reactivity — including when to seek specialist support and when medication is appropriate.

Practical training skills: Foundation cues, humane training principles, and structured protocols for toilet-training adult dogs and building confidence in the fearful ones.

Successful rehoming: How to enrich kennel life, match dogs to adopters honestly, conduct effective handovers, and support placements through the vulnerable early weeks.
