Dogs and Children Certificate

Designed for every day dog owners, this course is especially of interest to those of us who are parents as well as dog owners, in response to far too many news reports and horrific incidents involving the family pet attacking a child in the household.

The British College of Canine Studies has developed this course from scratch and hopes to address the questions that these incidents raise, and to better educate the average household on the delicate topic of children and dogs.

Why would a dog attack a child? Under what circumstances could the family pet become dangerous? Does it relate to specific breeds or does this happen to families who own family friendly breeds such as Labradors and Retrievers? What can the family do to avoid such an incident? How should a family introduce the dog to a new baby? What are the basics that even a child can learn, and when should our children leave the dog alone? What
sort of dog is right or wrong for a family with small children?

Only with better owners can we make better dogs. But what is it to be a good dog owner? We are all, unfortunately, far too aware of stories and news reports of ‘frenzied dog attacks’, children and adults alike, involved in horrific incidents, seemingly unpredictable behaviour from once trusted and loved pets. So what’s going wrong?

With ‘dog bite’ cases reportedly on the increase, and rescue centres bursting at the seams with unwanted, out of control animals with behaviour problems or issues, now seems a good time to get educated on the subject of dogs and the varying opinions on the way they view the world. Once we understand our dogs a little better and realise what they need from us on a physical and psychological level, we can begin to realise exactly why they do what they do at any given time. Previous ‘unpredictable’ behaviour, put into context, becomes perfectly predictable and understandable. In fact, once you know how your dog thinks, you’ll know what he’s going to do before he does it, and why.

Whilst the subject of ‘dangerous’ breeds is debatable, the education of every day owners can never be a bad thing.

The world of dog psychology and behaviour is not reserved for those who make a living advising owners of ‘problem dogs’. It should not be limited to television shows such as ‘The Dog Whisperer’, ‘It’s Me Or The Dog’ or ‘Dog Borstal’. It is the duty of every dog owner to learn the basics of what makes their pet tick. This is never more important than when it comes to dogs and children.

On completion, the student will:

  • Have learned the facts behind the news articles, understand the real dangers, and know how to avoid a possible incident.
  • Have a greater understanding of both dog training and dog psychology.
  • Be able to correctly introduce a new dog to the house.
  • Be able to correctly introduce the family dog to a new baby.
  • Have a better understanding of the importance of the role of the owner, human moods, temperament, personality, morality and their affects on the dog.
  • Be able to recognise key body language, gestures and signals of the dog.
  • Have a better understanding of canine body language and communication.
  • Have a greater understanding of what is required for a dog to be happy, healthy, well behaved, and mentally balanced, thus creating a safer environment for your child.
